June 4th | Cloud Computing and Huge Data Centers are Killing Our Planet!

Cloud Computing and Data Centers are killing our planet. Drive to the hardware store, buy a hammer, chisel, and piece of stone and begin writing about it. Put away your computer, turn off your internet connection, un-plug the video game console, iPod, and the TV. We must do everything we can to get rid of these giant, energy sucking, pollution generating, and planet killing warehouses of death immediately.

June 15th | Green Data Center News

There is no one way to pursue green technology and operations‚ such an effort calls for an integrated approaches that encompass hardware, software, and physical facilities. As part of my recent report on the industry’s leading green data centers (published in the May issue of INN), I had the chance to talk with Rod Brown, director of the mission-critical group at Nationwide Mutual Insurance, about his company’s green initiatives. Nationwide began emphasizing energy efficiency in 2005, he says‚ “We basically challenged ourselves to be energy-efficient, be environmentally friendly and find ways to do that.“ Nationwide’s New Albany, Ohio, data center is part of the company’s dramatic consolidation from 28 to three data centers. The company currently operates out of two consolidated data centers, with the third, greener New Albany center starting to come online this year. Much of this process was possible through virtualization of the company’s IT systems‚ Brown reports that up to 50% of Nationwide’s resources are now virtualized. The consolidation ‚“saved us quite a bit of money, and also makes us more energy efficient and greener,” he says. ‚“We’ve been able to leverage our equipment into two smaller spaces.”

Silicon Valley is the hub of the technology industry, but is its status on the wane due to the high cost of living and a more mobile work force? Sure there are days when I’m tempted to live where the action is instead of Austin, but an Economist article showing the migration of workers from California helped remind me why I stay put.

June 17th | Energy and Sustainability Perspectives

Until recently, many organizations did not place a big focus on having an energy management program implemented for their operations. But the trend is changing rapidly, and energy management is becoming a necessity for cost efficient operations, to support highly available services and for becoming better environmental stewards. Energy management is not a new topic at all.
