Inspired by the “capture the flag” game, the full-day hackathon event challenged participants to identify potential phishing risks within a group of given emails and develop solutions to detect and block malicious activity.

The learning community originated as a project in the Department of Statistics in the College of Science through a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation in 2014.

The event will also feature live panels hosted by KGW8-TV, an NBC affiliate in Portland, Oregon, and the national rural network, RFD-TV, which will be broadcasting from its American Farm Bureau studio in Washington, DC.
