Caterpillar Inc. has announced that Telia, a telecommunications company in the Nordic and Baltic regions, selected Cat® dealer Witraktor to deploy 12 Cat diesel generator sets to provide standby power capabilities at its new 34,340 square-meter (370,000 sq-ft), 24 MW data center in Helsinki, Finland.

Witraktor supplied, designed, installed, and commissioned a complete solution that includes eight Cat 3516B and four Cat 3516E generator sets to supply emergency power for server stacks, telecommunications, cooling, ventilation and other critical functions for the data center. The solution supplied by Witraktor also includes a remote cooling system with horizontal rooftop radiators, an exhaust system, and fuel storage as part of a package that provides N+1 redundancy.

“Witraktor and Caterpillar have configured and delivered an advanced standby power solution with field-proven components that help us optimize the performance, reliability and efficiency of our business-critical IT infrastructure,” said Eero Lindqvist, senior manager for Telia Finland.

Telia Helsinki Data Center is the largest open data center in Finland. Launching operations in June 2018, it provides top-level systems for security, safety, and power. The data center has multiple connections to Telia’s global network, through which almost 40% of the internet traffic of the entire world is carried each day.

The Telia Helsinki Data Center employs numerous systems that contribute to sustainability. Primary power for the data center is supplied by a combination of wind, hydroelectric and biomass sources, and waste heat will be recycled into the city of Espoo’s district heating system, providing heat for up to 25,000 households.

The U.S. Green Building Council recently awarded the Telia Helsinki Data Center a gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The data center has also received ISO certificates for exceptional operational reliability, operational quality, environmental work, and occupational health and safety. It has also earned the Certified Energy Efficient Data Center Award (CEEDA) designation.

“Telia excels through a pioneering spirit and deep expertise in advanced communications and data management technologies,” said Joel Feucht, general manager for Caterpillar’s Large Electric Power business. “Witraktor and Caterpillar are ideally positioned to deliver the robust power solutions, comprehensive data center experience, and responsive local support capabilities to help Telia address its clients’ highest standards.”
