As cloud server connection data rates are increasing, both copper-based and fiber-based technologies are needed. To facilitate the interconnection of these technologies, Nexans Data Center Solutions (NDS) is announcing the availability of 10 Gigabit Direct Attach Cables (DACs), 40 Gigabit DACs and 40 Gigabit Active Optical Cables (AOCs). These products complement NDS’ existing portfolio of copper and fiber optic cabling, connectivity, and pluggable transceivers covering the entire physical layer link.

NDS Passive DACs and AOCs driving the increased performance of data centers

“10G is still the most common server data rate for a top-of-rack connection, and DACs are the most popular option for that switch-to-server connection,” explains Rakesh Sambaraju, Ph.D., applications engineer, Nexans Data Center Solutions. “But we see the growing use of middle-of-row or end-of-row connections as data rates are increasing. And that length typically exceeds the reach of passive DACs, so AOCs become more important.”

The Nexans family of passive DACs is designed to minimize size and power consumption in data center applications where port density is paramount. They offer a high-performance, cost-effective, and ultra-reliable solution for high-speed connectivity. The DAC’s are available in lengths from 1 meter to 5 meters and comply with the latest industry standards:

  • The SFP+ 10G DACs are compliant with the IEEE 802.3, SFF-8431 and SFF-8472 standards

  • The QSFP+ 40G DAC’s are compliant with the IEEE 802.3 and SFF-8436 standards

The Nexans family of QSFP+ 40G AOCs provides a high-performance, low-power, ultra-reliable solution that is optimal for data center 40GBE and InfiniBand QDR connections. All products are compliant with IEEE 802.3 and SFF-8436 industry standards and include digital diagnostics functions. The AOCs are available in lengths from 1 meter to over 20 meters.

“Our data center customers are looking for technology partners that can provide complete solutions, and we anticipate their needs by offering them the appropriate products,” adds Brooke Ford, product manager, Nexans Data Center solutions. “The addition of the DACs and AOCs to the Nexans portfolio enhances our product offering for the data center market, and affords our customers the performance benefit of an integrated interconnect solution versus using passive patch cords to connect ports. As data rates change, we will add products to the family.”
