A campus-wide model for incorporating data that enables electrical network managers to make informed decisions in real time will be presented at the Microgrids Virtual Summit 2012 on Thursday, March 15. Kevin Meagher, Chief Technology Officer of Power Analytics Corporation, will demonstrate the success of his company’s microgrid installation at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego).

Meagher will join other panelists including representatives from UC San Diego, OSIsoft, Viridity Energy, and Clean Tech San Diego to discuss how high-reliability systems can be replicated across facilities throughout the world. “The UC San Diego microgrid is a best-in-class example of how to integrate a campus-wide model of incorporating relevant data to make informed decisions for an electrical network,” says Meagher.

“This microgrid also serves as an example for how to save money through intelligent power management, becoming a key enabler to solve energy issues and utilize smaller distributed energy platforms into the future.” The presentation will identify the challenges of integrating multiple generation sources such as a central cogeneration plant, an array of solar photovoltaic installations, and a fuel cell that operates on natural gas reclaimed from a landfill. Software requirements will also be addressed showing the importance of real-time data acquisition and analytics. When first operational, the project was the world’s first use of real-time software systems serving as the “software master controller” in a live customer installation.

Power Analytics Paladin® SmartGrid™ helped provide the power system optimization and energy market optimization capabilities necessary to ensure the reliability, energy efficiency, and cost efficiency of the UC San Diego microgrid. “Our partners were instrumental in helping us make informed decisions regarding our electrical network,” says Byron Washom, UC San Diego Director of Strategic Energy Initiatives. “They provided us with the ability for the microgrid to consider economics and carbon footprint, among other parameters, to ensure a reliable solution.”

Presented by The Smart Grid Observer, the all-day online summit will focus on the latest technology and business drivers behind microgrids in the education, commercial, military, government, health care, and industrial sectors among others. The presentation will be broadcast online on Thursday, March 15 at 1 p.m. EST followed by a live question and answer session with all panel members. The presentation will then be available on-demand at the conference website. Power Analytics Corporation is the energy industry’s leader in advanced electrical power software solutions and recently received seven new patents for its real-time energy management suite of products.
