In a senate subcommittee hearing held on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, Federal CIO Vivek Kundra said 800 data centers will be shut by 2015 with 100 being closed in 2011. The effort is part of the Obama Administration’s “25-Point Implementation Plan to Reform Federal Information Technology Management.”
Kundra also updated the committee on the progress of the Federal Cloud Computing Strategy that aims to “accelerate the pace at which the government will realize the value of cloud computing by requiring agencies to evaluate safe, secure cloud computing options before making any new investments.” Some agencies have already moved some functions to the cloud, including the Department of Agriculture, the General Services Administration, and the Census Bureau.
