Last year I was part of a small team at Emerson Network Power that was asked to identify emerging data center archetypes based on what we were hearing and seeing in the industry.
After years of focusing on consolidating a fragmented and inefficient collection of local and regional data centers into a strong core of centralized facilities, many organizations are now looking to drive processing, storage, and bandwidth closer to users to provide faster response to cloud-based applications and better manage the explosion of data being generated by people and devices.
For the past few years, the buzz in data center trade shows around data center infrastructure management (DCIM) software has been substantial — much of it hype, not reality.
