Mission Critical Issues
kh89bd0960-6c23-44 The last month has seen tremendous developments in the data center issue. Read down to learn more about developments at the 7x24Exchange's Fall Conference, the Uptime Institute's Design Charrette, and Teladata's Convergence Conference. Conference organizers have reason to be pleased with these recent events. More important, though, these October 2007 events brought a significant cross-pollination of ideas between these and other organizations as well as the first indications that the organizations that have emerged to make data centers more energy efficient, greener, and more reliable will be able to work together.
Mission Critical covered all these events and promises to continue to work with these organizations.
In coming weeks, events such as Liebert's Adaptive Exchange and a Data Center Dynamics show in Dallas will prove a chance to further these discussions and give the industry the opportunity to pursue and development bodies to provide further specialized education and standards for design and construction.
Mission Critical will be there to provide first-hand coverage. become a founder of our Data Center Wiki. For now, it is extremely low-tech, but I promise to roll it out electronically as soon as the professional contributions reach a critical mass.
We have also updated our
website. Thanks to Sun, we have been able to present a 10-minute virtual tour of one of their energy-efficient data centers.
I also wanted to take a moment to remind you to join our wiki (see down the page) and to ask about our data center database project.

IBM Launches World's First Corporate-Led Energy-Efficiency Certificate Program for Data Centers
IBM announced its Efficiency Certificates initiative on November 2, the industry's first corporate-led initiative to enable clients to earn energy efficiency certificates for reducing the energy needed to run their data centers.  The certificates earned -- based on energy use reduction verified by a third-party -- for the first time provide a way for businesses to attain a certified measurement of their energy use reduction, a key, emerging business metric. The certificates can be traded for cash on the growing energy efficiency certificate market or otherwise retained to demonstrate reductions in energy use and associated CO2 emissions.
The Efficiency Certificates initiative engages Neuwing Energy Ventures, a leading verifier of energy-efficiency projects and marketer of energy efficiency certificates, to document and verify the energy savings a client achieves through implementing energy efficiency projects. Energy efficiency projects can be identified using IBM's data center evaluation offerings. An evaluation will result in recommendations clients can take, including implementing virtualization technologies to reduce the number of physical systems needed, and fixing data center design flaws, to reduce unnecessary power consumption.
IBM intends to make the Efficiency Certificates program available across its entire line of systems and storage offerings, beginning with System z and System p in 2007. The Efficiency Certificates will first be available in the United States, and IBM hopes to expand participation to Europe in 2008.

Kranz Headlines 7x24Exchange Event
Gene Kranz recounted his role in rescuing the crew of Apollo 13  from near-certain death to attendees at the 7x24Exchange's Fall conference held October 28-31, in Grapevine, TX.  Kranz was lead flight director during the Apollo 13 space mission, which gripped the nation after an on-board explosion threatened the lives of the flight crew. The events of that day have been well documented in Kranz's book and the popular movie Apollo 13, in which actor Ed Harris played Kranz.  In his hour-long speech, Kranz outlined similarities between the demands placed on Mission Control during a space mission and those placed on a data center by the enterprise.
The keynote began 3-1/2 days of sessions, networking, and technical exchanges attended by more than 550 delegates.

Cassatt Launches Active Response
Cassatt Corporation unveiled its Active Response product line to help customers "go green" in their data centers. As more and more companies plan long-term strategies to reduce the power usage and carbon footprints of their data centers, Cassatt Active Response provides a sensible first step that can be quickly and non-invasively deployed to reduce the energy consumption of servers by as much as 50 percent. By actively powering servers on and off as needed and pooling physical and virtual server resources, the Cassatt Active Response product line not only greatly improves energy efficiency, it also increases application availability, security, and responsiveness to changing business needs.
The product line combines Cassatt's Active Power Management and utility computing technologies based on Cassatt Collage into a single software suite. Cassatt Active Response will have four editions, each providing progressively more capabilities. Customers can start with a stand-alone edition aimed exclusively at improving energy efficiency. They can then progressively expand their use of Cassatt by upgrading to additional editions or by applying additional policy-based controls to more servers across their organizations.

Green Grid Completes Three Technology Deliverables
The Green Grid , a non-profit consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems announced the completion of three key deliverables from its Technical Committee. The three key deliverables made available to members on October 23rd included:
    •    Qualitative Analysis of Power Distribution Configurations for Data Centers
    •    Existing Data Center Energy Efficiency Metrics
    •    An updated version of the Data Center Efficiency Metrics White Paper
In the Qualitative Analysis of Power Distribution Configurations for Data Centers, The Green Grid identifies seven high-level configurations for power distribution in the data center. This paper is one of the first to consolidate the advantages and disadvantages of each of these power distribution configurations.
The Existing Data Center Energy Efficiency Metrics white paper is the industry’s first consolidated look at all existing organizations and metrics that are focused on energy efficiency in data centers and related IT equipment. The updated version of the Data Center Efficiency Metrics White Paper refines the metrics first introduced by The Green Grid in February 2007 by more explicitly highlighting infrastructure efficiency. The Green Grid expects the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Datacenter Efficiency (DCE) metrics to be adopted by the industry and that, moving forward, all data centers will track and report their efficiencies using these metrics. It is important to note that, while these metrics currently define infrastructure efficiency, The Green Grid is also working on developing metrics for data center productivity which will include computational efficiency. The Green Grid also reiterated its intention to develop an industry-standard rating system for data centers, a goal adopted by the organization earlier this year.

The First Uptime Institute Charrette Sells Out
